The Forum for Young Albertans is a non-partisan political learning opportunity
for senior high school students. Through speaker presentations, group
discussions, tours and formal activities students are given the opportunity to
listen, learn from and question the decision makers and those who influence
their lives.
In a private audience with Forum participants, politicians debate one another on a variety of topics including education, the environment and the economy. Lobby groups have discussed tips and strategies for exerting political pressure. Political observers, university professors and the media provide students with a special analysis of provincial and local politics.
Students also examine and review concerns of the day through work shops, mock council meetings and parliamentary discussions. Issues addressed in the past have ranged from smoking by-laws to legislated drinking ages. National unity has been an ever-present topic of discussion during the Forum's 28 year history. Each Forum day will also include opportunities for students to relax, have fun and get to know other young Albertans. There is ample free time.
